Truth or Drink Rules

The core rule is one sentence long: answer the question honestly, or take a drink. There's no third option — no half-answers, no 'it's complicated' — which is exactly what makes the game work. A vague answer counts as a dodge, and dodges drink. Most groups add one modifier: if your answer is obviously a lie and the table calls it, you drink double.

For groups, the two classic formats are the circle and the hot seat. In the circle, play passes left and each player asks the next one a question — fast, fair, and ideal for parties. In the hot seat, one player takes questions from the whole table for a full round before rotating, which is slower but produces far better stories. Couples usually just alternate questions head-to-head, working down a list like the couples section above.

Now the rules that actually matter: drink responsibly. Non-alcoholic drinks count exactly the same as alcohol, so anyone can play with soda, mocktails, or juice and lose nothing. Build in water rounds every twenty minutes or so, know your own limits before the game starts, and never — under any circumstances — pressure someone to drink or to answer. Anyone can tap out of a question and a drink; the game is about the laughs and confessions, not the alcohol.
